May/June Test Drive Meme

All you need is love.
So the Sphere heard that some of you guys are lonely. It doesn’t want you to be lonely so it has decided that even though it’s not really February the people within its confines and connected to them deserve to have a sort of Valentine’s Day anyway. Celebrating love (all sorts of love, definitely not merely the romantic sort) is on display. Think pink and red and white and loads of hearts and rainbows.

all you need is some kind of love.
In the middle of the merchant dome, some of the stalls pushed aside a large pink and white stripped tent is set up. Inside is a series of small tables, each set up with numbers and two seats each. When people go in and register to receive the number, they are given three initial options. Option one is romantic dating with further subcategories based on gender preferences (if any) and orientation. The second option is for friendship. The Sphere wants you to make friends! A third option only open to the adults within the Sphere is for hooking up and no strings attached sex. That is also sectioned by orientation and preferences.

Each option you pick allows people to talk for five minutes before people move onto the next person. At each station is the option for ice breaker cards. Think would you rather or describe your perfect date (date date or a friendship date. Whichever you’re working on.) Should players wish it, there are various unnamed NPCs around for people to chat up, hook up with or whatever. Go a little bit nuts with it.

it's all for a good cause
John put a post up that calls for the option to sign up for (or to be signed up by someone else) for a date that’s auctioned off. She somehow managed to convince Max to host said auction (but don’t ask how. You don’t want to know what she had on him) so he is your MC for the night.

The gala takes place in the same tent as the speed dating, but it’s been made over to look rather gala like. There’s fairy lights and silk on the tables and an open bar with circulating free champagne. And everything else of course. As always with the sphere there’s food in abundance, things that typically one might think of in a romantic context: strawberries and oysters and chocolate and finger foods. It’s that sort of party. None of it has any effect though. Too many people imbibing for that.

There’s a small band playing for people who are interested in dancing, and various NPCs are currently using it. It’s a good party, lively and inviting.

i get by with a little help from my friends.
So, you know how the people within the Sphere tend to force festivals on you? Well, a big part of those is always food and gifts. These particular foods and gifts tend to come in the form of small valentine’s cakes or candy, or flowers for those not inclined for food. The flowers are yellow however, because this isn’t about love. This is about friendship. There’s signs for free hugs, and random people have been hired to go about telling folks that so and so is their friend. Even if they’re not. But they’ll still follow you down the street and spout things like poetry and cheers in the honor of epic friendships. Even if they’re not really all that epic--the friendships or the poetry.

let's go to the movies, let's go see the stars
Some people may remember a few months ago when Alex badgered Max into letting them have an open area movie screening. This time she didn’t need to do it! In the middle of the rec dome, a large screen has been set up, and there’s space for people to have blankets or chairs from home set up in front of the screen. Various vendors have set up carts or stalls here and there, selling the sort of foods that one would expect at the movies (popcorn, homemade candies, soda, juice, wine and beer, nachos and that sort of thing) along with some that one may not expect: (full curry dinners, burgers, basically a bit like a food truck festival. If you can imagine it it’s there.)

Before the movie, there’s cartoons running, some familiar, and some not, and this is an event that people have seemed to have taken to well. Children run around here taken with the idea for the movie, and it’s a fun, summery festive sort of atmosphere with a community vibe, despite the wine and beer for sale.

we're heckling! it's good to be heckling again!
The movie is a buddy movie double feature, and both of them are rated R, but there’s no one checking IDs so go nuts. The movies that are being shown are Hot Fuzz and The Heat because that’s just what buddy comedies happen to be. But movies aren’t to everyone’s taste and there are some people who have taken this to go full on commentary about them. Do you join in or shush them? It’s entirely up to you!

all you need is some kind of love.
Dragged in would be a safe way of describing the ridiculously tall man sitting at a friend-making table. He was reminded painfully of grade school, being forced to share things about his summer vacation, which had normally meant making something up. 'What did you do on vacation this year, kids?' 'I learned how to properly form and fuel a fireball, Miss Perkins!' Everybody stares. Awkward sidelong glances all around. Here, inside a pink and white tent with a number on his table, he felt like he was on display, to spite there being several others around.

Why did the weird ball want them to make friends? Were they going to take away the puppy later? Was this a weird social experiment? They'd provided some ice breaker questions on a little card at each table, and he read them over as the buzzer sounded for everyone to shuffle one table to their rights, and oh look! He had a new friend.

He looked up from the card smiling. Well, he thought, it's now or never, Harry. Here's when you find out whether you have a terrifying smile. He cleared his throat and read from the card authoritatively.

"Hello, new friend. My name is Harry. What's your silliest...dance move? Oh, come on, really?"

Now this was more like it. Harry Dresden and technology didn't mix well at all. Anything after World War II tended to malfunction around him, but here, he was far enough away from the projector that he could just enjoy a movie, like a normal person. He's got a pretty big blanket to himself, and an ungodly amount of snacks and sweets because he's a big guy and big guys like to snack. If anyone joins him on the blanket, which he doesn't object to, they will be treated to the wizard stuffing oozy, buttery popcorn in his mouth and then offering that greasy back to them.

"Wha shaam," he asks around a mouthful? He is grace. He is charm.

Let’s go to the movies - Someone to steal your snacks, as promised!

Llewellyn was more than a little fascinated with the progress made on moving pictures. The special effects, the sound, it was quite clear that the debate on whether the inclusion of audio would kill the industry or not had ended with both it’s survival and furthering. He did not understand some of the movies on display, but he certainly enjoyed getting to try all the interesting snacks while he tried to figure the plots or humour out.

He was on his way back to grab some more snacks (What? It’d been at least twenty minutes since he finished off the last thing he’d been munching on) when he happened upon a sight that definitely was enough to give him pause. Sure, it wasn’t a weird sight considering the fact that everyone else was doing exactly what Harry was. What everyone else was not, was nearly so tall (this dude was far taller than even he was!), nor were they hoarding quite as many snacks.

So rather than be put off by the rather lacking manners (his own needed polishing, according to some) he raised a brow before plopping himself down. “If you’re sure about offering, uh— Thanks, don’t mind if I do.” Llewellyn never turned down an invitation to share food, before the sphere they hadn’t come his way often enough.

One (or two) handfuls of popcorn later, he glanced away from the screen. “Mm... Oh, I’m Detective Llewellyn Watts, you are?”

Llewellyn will get on just fine with Harry, who finished off the the popcorn and chased it with a nice, long drag of coca cola (or the shameful imitation that passed for it here) before he nodded.

"Just Harry Dresden, Detective. I also answer to 'Gigantor', 'Ulgor the Barbarian', and 'Annoying Prick'." He reached to the side, grabbing what were apparently candied walnuts in a paper bag, taking a handful for himself, then offering them to the detective. "Walnut?"

Someone, at some point, needed to let Llewellyn know that the soda no longer contained cocaine. He had been avoiding the stuff since arrival. In his own world, Dr. Ogden had been cautioning those around the station against drinking too much of it, thus the detective had thought better of it himself.

At the moment, he just eyed the beverage curiously before finishing off his handful of popcorn and trying to work out just what he was supposed to call this man of many names. Admittedly, Gigantor seemed fitting considering his height. “That’s uh— a lot of names you’ve collected, Mr. Dresden.” Llewellyn tended to go with the safest bet until he figured out what the societal norms of another world was, follow the rules of his own. Usually someone corrected him, and he adjusted accordingly.

“Oh— those look good, thank you.” He added a moment later, quick to accept a handful of the candied walnuts for himself. Yes, Harry was going to have a hard time getting rid of Llewellyn now. Like a stray animal, you feed them and they keep coming back.

He grinned, having at least the decency to swallow the mouthful of candied walnut the was munching on before nodding and actually responding.

"I'm a wizard. I collect names." What that might mean exactly was up in the air, but he didn't leave Watts much time to ponder either the claim of being a wizard or what he might mean in regards to name collection. "And people who call me Mr. Dresden usually mean to shoot me soon, so Harry's just fine." And he set the bag down between the two of them. see? Friends! "And they are good. Not too bad for a weird science fiction hideaway under the waves."

A wizard who collected names? That was a new one... Anyone who knew Llewellyn, should be quite proud of him for not latching onto that particular detail and asking a dozen questions instead of listening to everything else that Harry had to say. Correcting himself, he nodded with a small bob of his head. “Harry it is then! Uh— and if it makes you feel any better... I don’t have a gun and I’ve never shot anyone before.” Well... Aside from himself. “So you don’t have to worry about that.” He blundered on a bit for a moment, falling silent again.

A rather delighted expression crossed his face at the obvious invitation to snack away on more candied walnuts, snagging a few more as he responded. “I find the food is one of the best things about this strange place, there’s a lot to try? At least, a lot of things I’ve never had before.” And when you’d been kidnapped by a weird glowing sphere and trapped at the bottom of the ocean, it was nice to have a little variety when it came to your coping mechanisms. Plenty of snacks to stress eat.

Finally, his brain jumped back to the earlier questions he had been saving. “So a wizard that collects names? What does that involve? There’s a lot of people with magic here, but I’ve never heard tell of that kind before.”

"Everyone who's ever shot anybody did it for the first time, once." He quirked a smile at the detective, though, as he grabbed another handful of popcorn. "The thought crossed my mind that it might be poisoned, or have some weird mind-control serum in it, but then I remembered they already put an alien mind probe inside my head and it made me feel a lot better about it."

He rolled a shoulder in a shrug, as though the question was a common one, and as though it wasn't a big deal to answer it, though out of context, the answer was pretty cryptic in it's own right. "Listening." But he nodded. "I'm not surprised. Wizards are notoriously secretive and hermitical...with reason. We have a lot of knowledge that would be dangerous in the hands of someone who didn't really know what they were doing with it."

Honestly, as someone who had nearly been poisoned before, Llewellyn couldn’t blame him for wondering about that. If he hadn’t been as stressed as he had on the particular day he’d been scooped out of and brought here, he probably would have considered that possibility himself. Instead, he’d gone straight for the cupboards in the weird kitchen area in the dorm to stress eat his way through a package of what he discovered were something the others referred to as knock-off Oreos. “Mm... and considering this place brings people back from the dead, I think that would be rather counter-productive of it to poison us all.”

Boy he hoped it was, with all the weird and stressful thing that happened once in a while he wouldn’t be surprised if something like that happened at some point. That said, he also had never died here as (what seemed like) almost everyone else had. “I’ve not heard of the thing in our heads controlling us, but it does have some rather annoying malfunctions now and again.” He called it malfunction if only to not focus on the fact that the memory shares could be intentional.

“Listening...?” His brow furrowed a little at that, cryptic indeed. Llewellyn was a little slower to answer, trying to turn over this new bit of information over in his head. To figure out how to sort it into place along with the things he’d heard or learned about magic from other people here. “A useful, practical skill. Not one that I would have thought would be useful for magic, what are you listening for? Names? Knowledge? Is uh— magic something you can hear?”

Oops, that’s probably one or two too many questions. The detective gone to stop himself, but then something else strikes him. “Wait, in your world magic is secreted away?”
