blue moon
So the people within the Sphere City miss the moon. At least, that’s what someone can draw from the fact that as January slips into February, large images of the moon are everywhere. The Full moon, to be more specific. There are silver streamers around the merchant dome, and lights have been modified to have a more silver than golden glow in appearance, even at all hours of the day there. Sure it makes things a bit difficult to see, but that’s not really a problem is it?

At night, several domes have large projections of the moon made against the domes. They’re pictures of the moon in varying states of artistic and scientific values. There's a kind of dreamy music that’s played, and a lot of the locals have silver flowers in their hair. Fire pits are common, and older residents are seated around them, telling tales of the moon and its connection to the waters above them. Some stories tell how it glows and shines or is made of green cheese. They also tell how sometimes there were people in the moon, men or women, gods or goddesses, or animals like rabbits. And some stories tell of how the moon would make people mad, and that’s where the term lunacy comes from.

Oh, and there are a few stories about werewolves too. And about how there walking among the people in the Sphere. Even now.

Food at the festival is based around the moon too, or at least the idea of the moon. There’s mooncake of course, but there’s also moon pies, half moon cheese pies, and pierogi, and various cheese and cracker platters, because the moon is made of green cheese after all. There’s moon-based cocktails, that are blue and silver. And some that are shimmering and shining.

People can draw fortunes from the moonwell, but, they’re silly and nonsensical, and people eat the silvery rice paper after they’re finished with them. A few of them however have more ominous sort of fortunes in them. Things like “help me” or “they’re out to get you” or “they’re coming and you can’t stop them.” People shrug those ones off too though. if someone asks about them.

what big eyes you have
So, there are rumors about werewolves that have been circulating around town, and people seem to be given red cloaks at random. Pretty girls and women are offered them the most, but they are open to anyone. If people put them on, which the surrounding locals will cheer and encourage them to do. Then they tell them that their clue is in their pockets and that they will save the town.

In the pockets is another silver disk with a list of names on it. One of those names is a werewolf. You’re given three clues (something like: ‘wearing a blue sweater’ or ‘bald man’ or ‘at the candy stall’) for each one, and then you either accuse them of being a werewolf or clear them. If you accuse them and you’re correct then you’re given a small vial with glowing stones in it and are told that they were actually pieces of the moon before it was lost. Whatever that means. You may want to hold onto them.

If you accuse them and you’re wrong, the game is over for you for the moment and the cloak is taken away. Each cloak has a different list of six names on it, and the names replenish every time someone gets a new cloak. Why yes, the Sphere is playing a game of werewolf with you. How the game goes entirely up to you, and whether or not your character gets invested or what. NPCs are definitely available for this if need be! Please feel free to go a little nuts with this, and player characters can definitely be one of the suspects if they're up for it.

exploration: something that was lost can be found
It’s big news around Sphere City: some old lost and sealed domes have been found along the edges of town. Not only have they been found, but they’re open! Not only are they open but the stuff inside is there on a first come first serve basis. These old domes show no signs of dust, but there are some personal effects within them, pictures and the like. They definitely belonged to someone who had been pulled into the city at some point within the last seven years.

And they’re definitely worth checking out. One never knows one might find in them. Various varieties of clothing are available, as are books, food items (probably shouldn’t eat them), toys and there may or may not be some magical or important historical things hidden here or there if your character is very lucky. Mod note: Nothing world breaky or living can be found, but small things like potions or jewelry or amulets or small weapons (daggers or guns with a very limited amount of bullets.)

mechanic: memory share
Too see the full updates on how memory shares work, please visit here
  1. Memory shares are experienced over the networked, and beamed directly into the other person's brains as if they are experiencing it themselves.
  2. Shares do not need to be written a certain way, but here is a mod example: Too see the full updates on how memory shares work, please visit Max Tinder memory share.
  3. These memories are things that they are watching through the experience of the person who's memory has already happened. It's like seeing a recording that feels very real. However, there isn't anything that they can personally do within it. These are things that have already happened to the character and are fixed points.
  4. These posts are responded to like a message on the network, and not in the memory itself.

wildcard
This is a good place to test out something like the network or an idea of your own! Remember upon waking in The Sphere, each character is fitted with a small golden circle behind their right ear. This is how they are connected to the network through a neural link. Touch and hold the button to create a broadcast of one of three types:
  1. Audio. Your character thinks audible words onto the network.
  2. Writing: Your character thinks text into the network.
  3. Video. Your character projects a broadcast of a video of themselves onto the network.
Replies are determined by the player. The network needs to be accessed by choice, so character broadcasts are not automatically beamed directly into people’s heads. The Sphere isn’t that rude.

Private messages are allowed by pressing and holding and pressing and holding again as you picture the person in your mind. This can be an image or a name, err more on the side of things being more accessible than less.

a. blue moon
For centuries, it's been known the moon was connected to the tides, that it had an effect on the minds and moods of the people who inhabited the Earth. Different cultures often attributed these knowns to deities, spirits, devils, and the like, and sometimes they were closer to the truth than they realized. Wandering around the market dome, the scents of the residents celebratory foods teased at his vampiric senses as the projected silver moon hung overhead, reminding him of older times, when the world had seemed so much bigger, and when strangers were rare and welcomed warily, but also when celebrations were held more sacred, because the world was dangerous and living was to be savored.

That energy was captured here, too, among the natives of this place. Even as he was invited to join one group at a fire, even as he accepted and took the drink they offered, took a seat among them, there was a sense of tension in the group, a welcoming but a tenuous one. Was he friend or foe? It was an unspoken question with which the vampire was familiar, and one to which he knew they would not like the answer: he was both.

The younger children in this particular group were markedly excited about the newcomer, though, and if he possessed a human's hearing, their miscellaneous pleas would have turned to garbled gibberish in his ears. As it was, he laughed as their requests all had a gist to be gleaned.

"Do I have any tales of the moon?" His voice was softly accented, but strangely, as though he'd been many places and his voice had absorbed the essences of their spoken words and blended them together into something vaguely western European. It was a baritone voice, smooth and warm, and his laugh touched his eyes when he spoke. "I may be able to muster one up, but you must be quiet. Do we have a deal?" The collected children for the most part hushed, and those few who didn't were quieted by the adults gathered around the fire.

[He supposed this was something like a podcast or a radio show, only instead of recording one's voice and posting it only, one simply thought and it was so. Useful if a little cumbersome, fascinating though. His voice, a deep baritone, warm and welcoming in tone, was softly accented and sounded vaguely western European.]

Good evening...what is it we call ourselves? Citizens? Spherites? Spherians? [A self-deprecating chuckle filters across the network before he continues.] Which do you prefer?

[A sigh, and a moment's pause.]

Forgive me. I digress. If I understand our situation correctly, many of you have been here for some time, a year or even more in some cases, yes? What do you make of this place? Even those of us who have only been here a short time, I would know your minds as well. I can understand your predicament is troubling, and why not? To my knowledge, such a structure should be physically impossible, and I've yet to find any record of schematics explaining the construction. That's to say nothing of the means of communication with which we've been provided.

Very disconcerting, I know, but it is, and thus it can be understood. I'd like to know how far we've come. Thank you in advance.

[There's a beat before he chuckles again.]

Forgive my lack of manners. My name is Antonio. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance.

Inesa sat among the children with a wide excited smile. She had been handing out moon charms and bracelets to the little ones but had grown quiet when Antonio had taken a seat. Inesa had a calming presence to the group as she turned her light blue-gray gaze at the seemingly young man.

All of the children agreed to silence though Inesa had to politely hush a little boy who was trying not to giggle with all this excitement.

At first, Inesa was just another member among those scattered about the fire but as the gentle breeze shifted, the scent of her skin lifted into the air and reached Antonio. It mingled with the heat and sulfur of the fire but it was unmistakable. It was inhuman in its nature and contained the aroma of the shimmering gleam of magic, light and crisp air.

The scent floating on the air was alien and intoxicating. He'd been in the presence of magic before, in his earlier life more often than now, but never had he smelled something so pure. Still, the collected audience awaited his tale and who was he to force such obedient customers to suffer anticipation?

"Alright. This tale comes from a land called the Philippines, which is hot, humid, and where the sun shines bright and strong." While he spoke, he also made eye contact with each collected, trying to determine the source of the scent. "Once, loooong ago, the Sun and the Moon were married, they say, and they shared a home in the sky. Once, the Moon left to collect vegetables in the jungle, leaving the Sun to watch over their children, but she forbade him from coming too close, for his heat would kill them."

His eyes found Inesa then, and he watched her curiously as he continued. "The Sun complied at first, but was eventually overcome with his love of their children, and he bent to kiss them." He looked back over the rest of the children. "What do you think happened?"
unknownmoirai: (Ah!)

[personal profile] unknownmoirai 2020-02-18 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Inesa smiled as the young children clustered around Antonio, instantly enraptured in his story. It was one she hadn't heard before and as a captive audience member, their gaze met from across the flames. There was no awkwardness but curiosity in his tale and an openness that didn't shrink away from his brief attention.

"They burned!" One child shouted while at the same time another pipped up louder. "No! They turned into cookies!"

There was a collective gasp of giggles as Inesa gently quieted them and nodded at Antonio to continue.

"Close." Antonio chuckles, eyes lingering for a moment longer on the woman who'd originally capture his attention. "They melted, and became the stars." Gasping, they look around at the domes above their heads, at the stars they cannot see.

"When the moon returned, she was furious. She chased the sun from the sky, and he follows her still to this day, hoping to make up for his mistake, but she will never abide his presence."
unknownmoirai: (Light smile)

[personal profile] unknownmoirai 2020-02-23 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
The clatter of the children rose at the end of his stories while small arguments broke out between the girls and boys who had listened to his tale.

"If that was me I'd never forgive him."

"But the stars are pretty. Isn't it a good thing they're up there? Their with their mom forever."

"Can the sun see stars?"

"I like the moon even better! She's awesome!"

Inesa smiled at the group who seemed determined to come up with their own theories about the sun, moon and stars that take place at the end of the story. She turned towards Antonio when it seemed that they were all enjoying themselves and spoke. "Thank you for the story. I don't think I've heard that one before but I liked it very much."

He'd heard the chatter of countless children throughout the centuries, and yet it never dulled in his ears. Smiling pleasantly, he looked up to the girl who smelled of warmth and magic.

"You are most welcome. It was a West African folktale. I'm glad you enjoyed it." He patted the seat next to him, inviting. "Have a seat."
unknownmoirai: (Ah!)

[personal profile] unknownmoirai 2020-02-28 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"West African? I don't think I've had the chance to visit there but I will try, whenever we return back to Earth." She lifted herself from her seat by the fire and stepped around to take the empty space at his side. Her movements are slow and graceful but without thought or nervousness. Inesa was very comfortable in this space and with the people around her.

"Excuse me. I don't think I had introduced myself. Those here call me Inesa." It wasn't her name exactly but a term of affection that Seregil had granted her.

"You should. What it lacks in physical wealth it makes up for in unique culture." As she approached, the strange scent of her grew and he couldn't help watching her as she moved. There was an ethereal nature to her motions that was both foreign and all too familiar.

"It's a pleasure, Inesa. My name is Antonio."

Spherelets perhaps?

I haven't really thought about it.

My name is Wanda.

I have been here for about eight months now. I don't believe that this is impossible but improbable, yes. We don't know the full scope of the domes but there is much of the complex we can't reach or access. There are also areas below the spheres.

Also, your accent is familiar. It's Slovakian, isn't it?

Unfortunately, there's not a lot we know. I'm one of the people who have been here a year. What we've discovered is that this place has a history--it's written in a language that none of us speak but also that the Sphere won't translate which is annoying.

Yeah. I know Rhys was working on it. He's not from Earth. And there was another alien here, something called a Time Lord who was also trying, but he didn't stay very long.

Honestly, it feels to me like something out of a scifi movie where the Sphere crashlanded or whatever. I don't think there's anything on Earth that can do what it does.
