The comment takes Richard a bit by surprise. Most people have been avoiding him - either because of the fact that they think he's an idiot for picking apples in a full suit or because he has a very intimidating look (being over six feet tall and having a sour personality). So someone walking up to him and actually attempting to engage with him was surprising; maybe slightly concerning for the other party's sense of asshole.
